SHADE
Set sails to block out the sun
>> SHADE TREES provide the best
eco-friendly shelter from the mid-day sun.
But where a tree is not an option, a small
business based in Revelstoke, B.C., has a
chic solution.
Shade Sails Canada (shadesailscanada.com)
makes covers of all sizes to throw shade
over swimming pools, pergolas and patios.
Made from high-density polyethylene fabric,
the sails are stain-resistant and impervious
to mould and mildew.
Leftover fabric doesn't end up on the
cutting-room floor. It's upcycled through
Shade Sails' spinoff business, Green Bag
Company, which makes heavy-duty totes
and garden grow bags of various sizes
up to 50 inches in diameter.
A basic eight-foot triangle sail starts at
about $400. Marine-grade Danish-made
hardware is sold separately.
The company offers a range of styles and
shapes, along with custom sails, but if
you've got time and talent, you might try
a DIY option. Canadian designer Tamara
Robbins Griffith shared instructions for a
sail she made for under $150 on a recent
episode of Citytv lifestyle show Cityline. You
can check out the video here: https://www.

other DIY options.
