Custom Designs Beautiful Finishes 204-890-6118 panachehomesinc.com >> FLOODS, TORNADOES, ICE-STORMS — natural disasters aren't all that common, but some Manitobans have experienced them all. And most of us have experienced a power outage at some point. Since the future forecast calls for more extreme weather events to strike more often, it pays to be prepared. You should have an emergency kit that contains everything your family needs to survive without power or outside assistance for 72 hours. Public Safety Canada offers step-by-step instructions for creating both emergency kits and plans online at GetPrepared.ca. You can download a list of essential items — water, flashlights and batteries, medication and food, for starters — or you can buy a pre-packaged kit online through the Canadian Red Cross (redcross.ca). Don't forget to add water, food and a carrier for your pets, and make sure every family member knows where the kit is located. Along with a fire extinguisher, smoke detector, carbon monoxide detector and first-aid kit, it's a good idea to have an old-fashioned landline in your home, since cordless phones will not work during a power outage. Creating an emergency plan should provide clear instructions for every family member so they know exactly what to do in case of a fire or other disaster. Include an evacuation plan, a designated meeting place, and plans to make contact in the event you are separated. It's a good idea to make sure everyone has an email address and phone number for a relative or friend who lives in another town or province. And you should have copies of important papers and prescriptions, as well as cash in case ATM networks are down. To learn how to prepare for emergencies of all kinds, visit GetPrepared.ca. IT'S A GOOD IDEA TO HAVE AN OLD-FASHIONED LANDLINE IN YOUR HOME, SINCE CORDLESS PHONES WILL NOT WORK DURING A POWER OUTAGE. Parade of Homes SPRING 2022 109
