Homes have changed by leaps and bounds since the Manitoba Home Builders' Association (MHBA) was formed 85 years ago. Back in 1937, a laundry room might be conveniently located in the backyard, with a clothesline. A national housing shortage meant any new home was hard to find, and even if you could find one, a 40% down payment was a typical requirement. The situation improved after the precursor to the Canada Mortgage & Housing Corp. (CMHC) was created in 1946, in part to supply housing for veterans of the Second World War. Today, along with supplying mortgage loan insurance that makes it possible to buy a home with a minimum down payment, the CMHC (cmhc-schl.gc.ca) is an excellent source of financial advice and information for home buyers.
