"I'm a recent homeowner myself and I
would say the biggest and best thing a
new homeowner should think about is
what battery system you want to buy into,"
Sweeney says. "From there, you expand
into any tool with a battery platform."
McMunn and Yates sales manager Scott
McKee says that category of power tools is
growing.
"The evolution of battery-powered
accessories is the newest thing as
everyone becomes more concerned with
the environment," he says. "But it costs a
lot more."
McKee's must-have list includes several
inexpensive items.
"You've got to have a stepladder," he says.
"Everybody has to get up, both inside
and outside the house. Also, for hanging
pictures, drywall anchors are a must. For
wall repair, you need a spackle of some
type, a putty knife, a sanding knife and
paint brush for touch-ups."
Then there are different kinds of saws, for
jobs from trimming a small tree to building
a birdhouse or backyard bench.
Of course, you'll need a place to store all
those tools, but you don't necessarily need
a fancy kit or wall system. Eventually, you'll
have all the equipment you need to build
one yourself.
