GRAND ENTRANCES — Cont'd from page 59 CUSTOMIZE IT The bells and whistles come out for more sizeable rooms. Klassen and her husband Josh — contractor and owner of Lot Sixteen Renovations — are currently designing a large mudroom for a family of five. Closet storage for cleaning supplies and seasonal clothing, bench seating, a farm sink for rinsing off dogs and the kids' dirty outerwear, shelves, hooks and a countertop round out the practical features of the space. And of course, the modern mudroom comes with its own colour palette, tile flooring, oak shelving and decorative backsplash to up the style factor. And don't forget decor (see sidebar) to add personalized finishing touches to a space that should really be renamed to remove the word "mud." "Your mudroom sets the tone for the rest of the home and should exude a style that you love," says Klassen. "From shiplap and stylish wall hooks to rich wood tones and cabinetry, your mudroom can say a lot about who you are and what you like." POH • A BULLETIN BOARD: "This acts not only as a natural place to collectively share schedules and important events, but creates a hub of communication between the people living in the home which brings in a sense of coziness at the same time as providing structure and storage for all those random papers and announcements you need to remember throughout a calendar year. This can be a DIY project or sourced out to include fancier features." IKEA's metal Sösdala memo board ($20) comes complete with clips. It's paired here with a Lindbyn mirror ($50). • INDIVIDUAL CUBBIES AND HOOKS: "This sets structure but can be made to suit each person's personality. Whether it's different style wall hooks or artwork, each space can become its own little focal point within a larger design." IKEA's Kartotek hook racks — black metal with white labels on a pine board — are sold in groupings of five ($25). • PERSONALIZED WALL BASKETS: "Rather than letting your mail pile up on your countertop, like I've been known to do in the past, design a mini mailbox for each person living in the home. This can give an empty wall purpose and still look stylish, while organizing everyone's personal mail." — Photos courtesy of IKEA Canada Cozy in Clover's Lauren Klassen suggests three decorative accents that can be as unique as the people using them.
