SUBMTTED PHOTOS PETS PHOTOS BY DARCY FINLEY. WINNIPEG HUMANE SOCIETY A first-time cat owner — or any cat owner — needs to keep in mind that they are their cat's best toy, adds Grant Rogerson of One Spoiled Kitty. "In choosing toys, make sure you get wands and a laser pointer for you and your cat to enjoy together. Other items for solo play include balls, springs and mouse- or bird-themed toys, tunnels, catnip or honeysuckle." Rogerson also recommends that every cat owner should have nail clippers, a brush and comb, a bed, a body harness if you take your cat outside, a scratching post and two litter boxes — or one more than the number of cats you have. Scratching is a natural and beneficial behaviour for cats, Murphy adds. "Scratching helps their claws stay healthy and sharpens them by removing the dead layers that have started to get brittle on top," Murphy explains. "These are things that some people may not see as necessary, but they make a tremendous difference in the cat's life. They actually provide cats a sense of security and wellness." Scratching also allows cats to mark their territory, so offering cats appropriate scratchers will reduce the likelihood of furniture getting scratched. Continued from page 21 If you're looking for a splurge item, consider a plush cat bed, tall cat tree or a cat carrier. In addition, both Murphy and Rogerson suggest window cat beds. Cats are vertically inclined and love to be perched above the action to observe. A window bed, which can sit on a ledge, suctions to glass or atop a stand that allows cats to watch squirrels and birds outside while soaking up the sunshine. SPLURGE ITEMS "People love to dress up their cats and post pics and videos. We stock lots of cat costumes, hoodies, hats, collars, bandanas, glasses and bling to make your cat a star." – Grant Rogerson, One Spoiled Ki y OTHER TRENDY ITEMS FOR CATS INCLUDE CAT COSTUMES
