IT'S VITAL THAT YOU KNOW WHERE ELECTRIC,
GAS AND CABLE LINES ARE LOCATED BEFORE
YOU START DIGGING HOLES FOR FENCEPOSTS.
WHERE TO START
Jeff Gostick, building project coach
with Olympic Building Centre, says
there are three important items to put
at the top of your to-do list.
First, you must locate underground
utilities. Visit the Click Before
You Dig Manitoba website at
clickbeforeyoudigmb.com to submit
a location request online, or call
1-800-940-3447. It's vital that you
know where electric, gas and cable
lines are located before you start
digging holes for fenceposts.
If your fence is shared with a
neighbour, be sure to locate the
property line to ensure posts are on
your side, or straddling the property
line. Discuss your plans with your
neighbour before you start digging.
And finally, check local bylaws
and community rules. The City of
Winnipeg (winnipeg.ca) restricts
fence heights to six feet, six inches for
side yards and backyards, and four
feet for front yards. Some housing
developments may have rules in place
for street-facing fences to maintain a
certain standard within the community.
