MATERIAL OPTIONS "Generally, if you're going to do it on your own, pressure-treated wood fences are hands-down the most common type in our market," says Gostick. "If you're handy, you likely already have most of the tools." A pressure-treated wood fence is cost-effective, materials are readily available, there are endless style options and you can stain it any colour of your choosing. Gostick says the one drawback is that a wood fence requires upkeep, but a good wood fence should last 20-plus years with proper construction techniques and maintenance. Chain-link fencing is affordable, but it requires specialized equipment to install. Hiring a fencing company to install a chain-link fence will make the project go quickly, but also increases the cost. However, chain link is long-lasting and no- maintenance, and you can add privacy slats or greenery to enhance the look. Ornamental fencing is a common street-facing feature in newer developments. Usually black, it looks like wrought iron and doesn't really offer privacy. Most ornamental fences consist of skinny vertical bars anchored by metal, concrete or stone pillars. They are typically more costly than either wood or chain link. Composite fencing, while beautiful and relatively low maintenance, can be cost prohibitive. But you never have to paint or stain it. Just clean it periodically. Vinyl fencing offers full privacy but Manitoba's extreme temperature swings can negatively affect the material, leading to replacement and upkeep costs.
