STYLE TRENDS
Fencing trends on the rise include using cedar
— which is naturally self-preserving — instead of
pressure treated wood.
Gostick says that using larger diameter posts, say
6x6 inches, can give a fence a greater presence in
your yard. And if you want your fence to play a more
visual role in your landscape, you might consider a
horizontal instead of vertical fence.
"Orienting the boards horizontally gives a fence a
streamlined and modern look," he says.
There's also a growing trend toward increasing the
post heights at either side of your gate and adding a
decorative piece across the top.
"This does double duty, as it adds greater strength
towards the gate to ensure that things don't come
out of alignment. Having this structure above the
fence also acts as an indicator to people visiting the
home so they know where they're supposed to be
entering," he says.
Finally, you may want to dress up your fence or
gate with decorative hardware or handle sets. Or
use contrasting material for the fence and gate. For
example, you might install a black metal gate in a
wood fence for a unique look.
Gostick says more homeowners are also adding solar
post lights to help illuminate their yard, or including
built-in planter boxes to tie in landscaping elements.
