you are and creates a story."
Personal items like photos, travel
souvenirs, family heirlooms or other
objects you love can be integrated into
your overall home design to give it a
unique yet cohesive feel. "Mix some of
those old and newer pieces to create
character," she says. "It's more fun if
there are stories to the things that are
in your house rather than 'I just went
to Homesense and picked it up on
Thursday' — which is a fun thing to do,
though, so I think there's a balance."
DON'T: LEAVE YOUR
DÉCOR UNBALANCED
Design rules dictate that balance is
very important. "I always talk about
if something is happening on one
side of the room, try to balance it with
something on the other side of the
room," she says. "So let's say you're
going to do a bold feature colour on
one side of the room. On the other
side, you need to do something to
balance that out, whether it's an ac-
cessory or a fabric or a piece of art or
something that has that colour in it."
