There are currently no licensing or certification requirements in Manitoba that require companies to meet a specified level of compe- tency in order to take out a building permit and build a home. "The MHBA has association-set standards that all of our members have to adhere to, meet and main- tain," McInnes says. "That provides you, as a consumer, a higher level of confidence that the builder you are hiring is a professional." McInnes says it's also important to note that all MHBA builder members must be COR or SECOR certified, two provincially recognized work- place health and safety certification programs for companies involved in construction. That means their work sites must follow all the latest safety standards and codes and are regularly audited by the Construction Safety Association of Manitoba. Not only does that ensure workers can perform their job in a safe environment, but it also reduces the chances of a workplace inci- dent that could cause delays in the construction of a new home. "Safety is something our members take very seriously and that's why it's a requirement before you can join the association that you are certified," McInnes says. Another benefit to working with an MHBA member is that it provides homebuyers with the peace of mind that they are working with someone with a high level of training and all the latest industry knowledge, including what the latest building code requirements are. SUBMITTED PHOTOS THE MHBA WAS VERY ACTIVE IN TERMS OF EDUCATION AND TRAINING FOR ALL OF ITS MEMBERS IN THE LEAD UP TO THE ADOPTION OF THE LATEST BUILDING CODE UPDATES IN JANUARY OF THIS YEAR.
