Pushing the Envelope Cont'd from page 117 "When you tighten up a building, you run the risk of condensation on the windows. HRV prevents this by introducing outside air," Vernaus explains. "In Manitoba in the winter, this is pretty important because we're not opening windows. Some ventilation is required to be comfortable." Updated standards for new homes require a minimum of R20 insulation in the main living areas, R40-R50 insulation for attics and R12-R20 insulation for basements. The R-value is a measure of thermal resistance or thickness of the insulation. The higher the R-value, the thicker the insulation. "This allows people to feel more comfortable in their homes because it eliminates drafts. Windows have gone to triple pane or dual pane with coatings and gas fills that make them more energy efficient," Vernaus says. "It saves people money on their energy bills and improves their health and comfort." While new homes benefit from these improvements, there's no reason older homes should be left in the cold.
