Basement
Referred to in new homes as lower levels, basements are no
longer dingy concrete hollows homeowners are eternally
planning to finish one day. A lot of home buyers are having
their basements developed from the start — before they
have a chance to become giant drop zones.
That means organizers like Boisselle have to find ways to keep
homeowners' non-essential items hidden. For one family of
seven in Linden Woods, that meant building cabinets to cover
the entire perimeter of the basement.
"Their lower level is all cabinets, all the way around."
Lower-level media centres also have potential for disaster, but
Grantham says Rosehill commonly creates custom media units
that fit under the TV set to keep Blu-ray players, gaming consoles and other devices (and their many cords) under control.
"Each family is unique in what they need to store," she says.
Toy overflow from bedrooms also makes the lower level a
perfect playroom spot. Boisselle suggests using big baskets
to hold plush toys, desks with drawers for craft supplies and
sealed bins for Lego, which can be placed on shelves so as not
to take up that precious playtime floor space.
"It's very important just to have the structures," she says. "We
can add that to a new home — or an existing home."
