MARCH 2014 • PAGE 9 NeeginanCollegeInformationSessions CAHRD CENTRE FOR ABORIGINAL HUMAN RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT INC. "Creating futures one family at a time!" Aboriginal Community Campus Students Get Active with Sport Manitoba Students of the Aboriginal Community Campus (ACC) are getting into shape through free-of-charge classes offered on a weekly basis by Sport Manitoba. The initiative to increase physical activity and healthy living in the urban community of Winnipeg, Manitoba was established in September 2013 by students of the University of Manito- ba's Bachelor of Kinesiology program. These students, completing their practicum with Sport Manitoba, ran a successful pilot last school term so the program is again being offered to ACC students for the current term. Classes are lead by instructor Jayce Van Alstyne, a Strength and Conditioning Specialist, who guides the ACC students through strength circuit-training and core workouts using Sport Manitoba's state-of-the-art facilities. "I try to give them variations so that people have options and will want to come back," Van Alstyne notes of his teaching methods. He also indicates that the number of weekly participants is growing - "We started off with a small group of five to six students, and now we're at thirteen to fourteen every class." Sport Manitoba currently has future plans to expand into a 20,000 square foot facility. It is the hope of Sport Manito- ba to continue offering these classes for community organizations like CAHRD with the new space. Teachers at ACC have noticed the benefits of Sport Manitoba's initiative in their students. Alycia Smith, a teacher in the Neeginan Learning & Literacy Centre, writes, "I think that these exercise classes give students the chance to feel good about themselves physically and mentally. Physically, because they slowly start to feel stronger and have more endurance. Mentally, because exercising allows oxygen to be delivered throughout the body more efficiently, hence the energy boost you feel, which in turn helps keep them more focused and alert in class. All in all, those who do any type of exercise, whether walking or weight lifting, feel happi- er with themselves. Our students leave Sport Manitoba laughing and joking every Tuesday." Upcoming Programs at Neeginan College CAHRD Offers Fitness Classes for Neeginan Learning & Literacy Centre Students CAHRD Offers Fitness Classes for Neeginan Learning & Literacy Based on the positive feedback from students participating in the Sport Manitoba program, CAHRD has started its own pilot program. Neeginan Learning & Literacy Centre students are the first group to join. Classes started in February 2014 and are held twice a week on-campus. Classes are led by Healthy Living Coordinator, Courtney Koval, who is a CSEP (Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology) Certified Personal Trainer. All participants are required to go through an initial assessment to determine their base level of fitness and health. Once pre-screened for any health conditions preventing class participation, students complete "metabolic resistance training that will help improve strength and cardio conditioning," notes Koval, adding, "from there, they will be educated on how to sustain a healthy lifestyle which will include healthy eating, physical activity, and overall healthy habits that they will keep permanently." The classes have been popular among students and continue to grow in participant numbers. This program was developed in partnership with Manitoba Aerospace and has been recognized within the manufacturing industry as covering all course subjects necessary for a Machinist Level 1 Appren- ticeship. The program includes: blueprint reading, aviation maintenance orientation, safe work practic- es, operation and maintenance of tools and measur- ing devices, operation of machine equipment includ- ing lathes and Computer Numerical Control (CNC), milling and grinding machines, and the construction of items from metal and related materials.
