School of Rights Museum's primary focus is education The CMHR worked with the Canadian Teachers' Federation (CTF) to develop a national human rights toolkit for teachers. The free toolkit will be available online at the end of September and provides age-appropriate study guides, handbooks and other resources that will expand over time. CTF, the CMHR, the Assembly of First Nations and other organizations are also collaborating on a national Canadian Defenders for Human Rights curriculum toolkit for Grades4 - 12. A national teacher survey conducted in partnership with the CTF last year found that the vast majority of teachers — 94% of respondents — want more professional development opportunities in human rights education. This year, the CMHR partnered with the University of Manitoba Faculty of Education to create a summer institute for teachers called The Fourth R: Teaching and Leadership for Human Rights Education. The museum also signed an education partnership agreement with the International Human Rights Institute for Peace in Normandy, France, where thousands of Canadians were killed during the Second World War. That partnership could result in a Winnipeg-based international student program based on the French institute's week-long University of Peace program. The museum's national students' program will welcome students from across the country — and eventually from around the world. And the CMHR is collaborating with a variety of institutions to organize lecture tours for human rights defenders who will speak at the museum and other venues across Canada. Teachers are invited to attend open houses at the CMHR this fall to explore learning opportunities that range from concepts of fairness and sharing for kids in kindergarten to history and legal aspects of human rights for students in high school. In Manitoba, human rights education is a vital component in classrooms. In the days leading up to the CMHR's opening, all 77 schools in the Winnipeg School Division participated in Everybody has the Right week. During the week, 168 students in Grades 3 - 12, drawn from every school in the division, created a collaborative Mosaic Mural. Students worked in groups of about 24 on individual components that were then joined together. While the week marked the CMHR's opening, it also celebrated the division's diversity and individual schools' own commitments to furthering human rights, through initiatives such as anti-bullying campaigns and food drives, diversity clubs and gay-straight alliance groups. On Oct. 29, thousands of students will attend Free the Children's We Day at MTS Centre, where they're treated to entertainment and a slate of inspirational speeches and activities. Students earn their tickets to We Day through actions — fundraising to build a school in a developing country, collecting food for local food banks and taking part in activities. One such activity is We Are Silent, in partnership with education heroine Malala Yousafzai's Malala Fund. Students take a 24-hour vow of silence in support of millions of girls around the world who are denied the right to education. Malala Yousafzai and Free the Children founder Craig Kielburger are among the many defenders of human rights whose stories are told at the CMHR. ▲ ➤ Education is the principal role for the Canadian Museum for Human Rights (CMHR). Starting in January, students from kindergarten to Grade 12 will be able to visit the museum on school group tours, but educational initiatives extend far beyond the museum walls. A national teacher survey conducted in partnership with the Canadian Teachers' Federation last year found that the vast majority of teachers — 94% of respondents — want more professional development opportunities in human rights education. While the week marked the CMHR's opening, it also celebrated the division's diversity and individual schools' own commitments to furthering human rights, through initiatives such as anti-bullying campaigns and food drives, diversity clubs and gay- straight alliance groups.
