Celebrate hockey during Hockey Day in Canada (page 108) at Riding Mountain National Park on Feb. 10 and 11. There will be hockey tournaments, shinney games, skating, tobogganing and a festive social. The festivities are part of a national tribute to Canada's beloved sport, with events being held across the country. Facebook suggests it should become a national holiday.

Check out the Birch River Sled Dog Races on Feb. 11 in Birch River. The eight- dog, 12-mile races include competitors from across Western Canada. Enjoy the pancake brunch and other activities too. Hosting the races is an annual community tradition.

Try your luck and skill at the Lake of the Prairies Ice Fishing Derby (page 102) on Feb. 25 at Lake of the Prairies. First prize is $10,000 and there are 24 more prizes, plus those you can win by purchasing tickets to enter the raffle. Derby participants pay an entry fee, must have a valid fishing license and use a barbless hook. Up to two holes with one line each, per person. Winners judged by length and time, between 11 am and 3 pm.
