Oak Hammock Marsh Interpretive Centre (pages 115 & 121) Most of the 400,000 migratory birds have taken wing, but there's plenty of winter wildlife and activity at this sanctuary, just off Hwy. 67, 40 kilometres north of Winnipeg. Along with kids nature crafts, snowshoeing and animal tracking, stargazers can learn about the constellations, then bundle up and hit the rooftop observation deck on Astronomy Nights, the third Thursday of each month.

Winnipeg Beach Wonderful Winter Weekend (page 120 & 121) – Feb. 17 - 20 A bustling summer resort town at the turn of the 19th century, Winnipeg Beach was so popular, as many as 13 daily trains carried passengers to and from Winnipeg, 80 kilometres south. Cottagers flock back to the town – the setting for TV series Falcon Beach – for this winter festival. There's friendly competition in a curling bonspiel, snowmobile races, ice-fishing derby, chili cook-off and poker derby, with live music at local hotspots and fireworks over the frozen lake.
