PEMBINA V ALLE Y DUFFERIN HISTORICAL MUSEUM Dufferin Historical Museum has artifacts including a post office, fire equipment, printing press c1900, historical records of Carman, R.M. of Dufferin and surrounding areas. The trail was also followed by fur traders and settlers DARLINGFORD MEMORIAL AND PARK (PHS) The Darlingford Memorial and Park, dedicated in 1921 to the men of the area who served and died in the first and second world wars, overlooks the Pembina Hills. Gretna Peace Bell Emerson The town is named after poet Ralph Waldo Emerson. The Tourist Information Centre houses displays interpreting The Boundary Commission Trail, the North West Mounted Police, the arrival of the first Mennonite settlers and a Trans- Canada kiosk. A larger-than-life statue of a North West Mounted Police officer commemorates the founding of the NWMP in 1873. location: PTH 75 at the U.S. border EMERSON COURT HOUSE AND TOWN HALL (PHS) The Emerson Court House and Town Hall, built in 1917-1918, is a splendid example of a small neo- classical style municipal hall. This was the last courthouse built during the great settlement boom of 1880-1920. Several of the rooms display authentic furnishings. Open Monday to Friday. p: 204-373-2002 b EMERSON DUTY-FREE SHOP Large selection of souvenir clothing, Lladro figurines, giftware, jewellery, fragrances, cosmetics, wine, liquor and tobacco are all tax and duty free. The Anglican Church was built in 1876 (corner of Church and 1st Street); while the bell of St. Andrews United Church originally hung in Grace Church in Winnipeg, where it welcomed Colonel Garnet Wolseley's force to the Red River Settlement in 1870. FORT DUFFERIN The site of Fort Dufferin was used as a staging point by the British contingent of the International Boundary Commission, the North West Mounted Police and immigrant settlers who arrived by steamboat. A self-guided interpretive trail and two Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada plaques commemorate the site. Gretna A cairn commemorates the Mennonite pioneers, who in 1875 crossed the Red River at Emerson and followed the Post Road westward into the treeless plains shunned by earlier immigrants. The peace bell, a 115-year-old school bell, was installed in a peace tower in Centennial Park in 1967. location: north of Gretna on Hwy. 30 Kaleida The cemetery at a stone Anglican church southwest of Darlingford contains gravestones of pioneer families.
