94 Souris Souris is famous for its 102 year old 177 m/582 ft free-suspension foot bridge over the Souris River. This bridge is the longest of its kind in Canada and was built by Squire Sowden. Open June, 2 – 5 p.m. Sunday only; July and August, 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. daily. Group tours by appointment. Admission charged. location: 26 Crescent Ave. E p: 204-483-3309 VICTORIA PARK Victoria Park has 75 serviced and unserviced campsites, outdoor swimming pool, walking trails, picnic area, Elks playground, baseball diamonds, boat dock, bird sanctuary. Fee charged for camping and swimming. Virden Manitoba's main oilfield is at Virden, where pump-jacks dot the landscape. Oilfield tours can be arranged through Manitoba Industry, Economic Development and Mines, Petroleum Branch. p: 204-748-4260 w: www.virden.ca VIRDEN CANADIAN PACIFIC RAILWAY STATION (PHS) The former Virden Canadian Pacific Railway Station constructed in 1906 is an impressive fieldstone structure that now serves as a community arts centre. VIRDEN MUNICIPAL BUILDING AND AUDITORIUM (PHS) Virden Municipal Building and Auditorium is the oldest opera hall in Western Canada. The 1911-12 structure included an auditorium, fire hall and municipal office. The fire hall was demolished, the auditorium restored and the municipal hall renovated. VIRDEN PIONEER HOME MUSEUM INC. Virden Pioneer Home Museum Inc. is a large brick home built in 1888 and furnished to depict life in the Victorian era. Open May to end of August, Monday to Saturday 10 a.m. – 6 p.m., or by appointment year-round. Closed Sundays. Admission charged. location: 390 King St. W p: 204-748-1659 f: 204-748-2501 w: http://virden.cimnet.ca Waskada WASKADA MUSEUM Waskada Museum occupies 10,000 ft2 including four historic buildings (1906 Union Bank, 1914 Anglican Church, 1896 Menota School, 1927 blacksmith shop) and two display buildings. Pioneer artifacts and clothing, military memorabilia, plus unique items—1903 mounted whooping crane, Simplex silent movie projector, hand-powered tablesaw, fireless cooker, WWII "Weasel" snow tracker. Restored cars, trucks, tractors, steam engine, horse-drawn fire wagon. Open daily July and August or by appointment. The collection includes memorabilia from the pioneers, the insurance company, the Criddle family and Nellie McClung. The St. John the Divine Anglican Church (built at Rounthwaite in 1882) is a designated provincial heritage building. Open July and August 1 – 6 p.m. and 7 – 9 p.m. By appointment rest of year. Admission charged. location: 102 - 4th St. p: 204-824-2369 b WAWANESA MUTUAL INSURANCE COMPANY (PHS) The Wawanesa Mutual Insurance Company was created in 1896, providing farmers in the Wawanesa area with their own insurance company. Alonzo Fowler Kempton, its founder, began the operation by insuring straw-burning threshing machines. Wawanesa Mutual has grown to become the second largest Canadian-owned insurance company in the country. This circa 1900 building is home to the Sipiweske Museum. location: 102 - 4th St. WESTERN
