An Elder of the community struggles down to the Nelson River when she hears a distinguished sound of beating drum coming south of the river and at that moment she knew it was a 16 foot Oar sweeping across the river to move a 40 foot York Boat. She paused to take a picture of the York Boat team preparing for the upcoming Treaty and York Boat Days (TYBD's). As it was in the day of the fur trade, the York boat could carry furs and goods destined for European markets. These goods were first brought down from posts as far away as the Hudson's Bay. The Nelson River was the travel route and the avenue by which the York Boat would travel to its final destination making the fur trade possible. Miles of harsh northern wilderness had to be crossed to bring furs and goods to market. It was not an easy livelihood for our people but they worked hard and persevered. Their efforts and struggles established the foundation of the Canadian economy. Only the hardiest of people persevered. Today, through NHCN's annual summer celebration, Treaty and York Boat Days the community relives their traditions and heritage and the many accomplishments of the past and present. This year's celebration would not have been possible without the support of Norway House Cree Nation Chief and Council, who led the sponsorship program and secured #TYBD2015 headliner, "Sawyer Brown". We would like to thank our Corporate Sponsors; the Quest Inn & Health Centre, The Northwest Company, Low's Family Foods, the Keenanow Trust Secretariat, the NHCN Gaming Commission, Rich Therrien at Jim Gauthier Chevrolet, Manitoba Hydro and Norway House Cree Nation. We would also like to extend our gratitude and thanks to the many volunteers, NHCN staff, EMS, NHCN Fire Department for contributing their time, for coordinating events and ensuring the success of TYBD's. Last but not least, We thank NHCN membership and the many visitors for attending and participating in our summer celebration. We hope you enjoyed yourselves and we look forward in seeing you at the 2016 TYBD's. Ekosani. a message FRom chieF Ron evans GOODCREDITBADCREDIT NOCREDIT WECANHELP!
