26 ACTIVITIES Bishop Velychkovsky Martyr's Shrine is Canada's second martyr's shrine. A chapel contains the remains of a Ukrainian Catholic martyr, Blessed Vasyl Velychkovsky. He was beatified by Pope John Paul II and suffered severe tortures during the Soviet regime. He died in Winnipeg in 1973. Learn about his life through video and artifacts. Free admission. Visit this two-and-a-half storey fire hall built in1904 and see an 1882 Ronald Steamer, 1928 LaFrance, 1930 LaFrance, 1936 Diamond T hose wagon, 1958 Mack, 1966 Mack,1870 hand-drawn hose reel, 1880 hand-drawn chemical reel and 1900 horse-drawn hose wagon. Visit the stable, hayloft, oat bin, harness room and archives. Open year-round. Admission charged. This impressive neo-Gothic church was built in 1884 and designed by Charles Wheeler, architect of Dalnavert House. Open May to September for guided tours. Displays share the story of the settlement of Jews in Western Canada. The Freeman Family Holocaust Education Centre remembers the victims of the Holocaust in artifacts and images. Stroll grass runways and explore the modern clubhouse. See the oldest home-built aircraft in Canada, unique antiques, and many examples of modern aircraft, including light aircraft on skis or floats.
