56 Rainbow Falls – Whiteshell Provincial Park At 115 m, West Hawk Lake on Hwy. 44, is the deepest in Manitoba. A meteorite is believed to have created the crater which eventually became a lake. This meteor impact site is one of those listed as a World Terrestrial Impact Structure. The townsite offers full amenities including a marina, accommodation and campground. location: 1.5 hours east of Winnipeg on Highway #1 w: www.nrcan.gc.ca/ess West Hawk Museum has displays of geological interest including the history of the formation of West Hawk Lake as well as other interesting facts unique to the area. Open daily mid-May to September long weekend 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. location: West Hawk Lake Campground Office Stay and camp on picturesque Caddy Lake. Go canoeing, fishing, boating, camping and hiking. Explore the Caddy Lake Rock Tunnels – caves created by railroad construction. Have a picnic or start the 170 km Caddy Lake Canoe Route. Stop and smell the flowers at the Lily pond, just west of the lake on Hwy. 44. Hike over 60 km of rugged Precambrian terrain for experienced backpackers on the Mantario Hiking Trail at Caddy Lake, or the north shore of Big Whiteshell. location: boat access, north end of Caddy Lake p: 204-349-2201 for water levels At Falcon Lake, come camping and enjoy some recreation including golf, tennis, horseshoes and horseback riding. In summer at the Falcon Lake Golf Course, play this challenging 18-hole course than runs along a forest. At the Falcon Ridge Ski & Recreation Area, enjoy cycling and hiking in the summer. Rent equipment and take lessons. location: 100 Ridge Rd., Falcon Lake p: 204-349-8273, 204-349-8445 w: www.falcontrails.mb.ca Pine Point Rapids, this 8.2 km trail consists of two loops through the boreal forest along the Whiteshell River, past waterfalls and rapids. Allow four hours to hike the entire trail. location: north of Betula Lake on PR 307 Rainbow Falls is a favourite stopping place for visitors and camera enthusiasts. The falls can be reached by car from the White Lake Resort access road. Wheelchair accessible, fishing platform and washroom. location: White Lake off PR 307, White Lake Resort As you move north through the park on PR 307 and 309, you are treated to miles of scenic beauty dotted with cosy resorts, campgrounds and peaceful picnic areas. The border towns of Rennie on Hwy. 44 and Seven Sisters on PR 307 offer a full line of services such as grocery stores, gas stations, hotels, motels and restaurants. At the Whiteshell Fish Hatchery, trout, walleye and other species such as sturgeon are raised to replenish lake stock. Interpretive exhibits showcase information about fish biology and management.
