EAST E RN ATTRACTIONS Anola Step back in time and visit a pioneer village complete with school, blacksmith shop, pioneer house, chapel and Springfield's first fire truck at the Anola and District Museum. Open Sunday from May to September and by appointment. Admission charged. location: Weiser Cres. p: 204-866-3009, 204-866-2922 Beausejour Visit the Beausejour Daylily Gardens – two acres with over 600 daylilies, 150 irises, dozens of peonies and hundreds of other perennials and lilies. See the hardy fruit trees and shrubs, visit the picnic site, play lawn checkers and bocce. This garden (Zone 2B) is the coldest American Hemerocallis Society display garden in the world. Free admission. From 1906 to 1914, it employed up to 350 workers at a time. They made bottles for breweries and soft drink companies. Nearby, stop at Chryplywy Nature Park. location: southwest outskirts of Beausejour Brokenhead Tommy Prince School, on the Brokenhead First Nation, was named after Manitoba's most decorated Aboriginal war veteran, Sergeant Thomas Prince. Prince served during the Second World War and the Korean War. location: Hwy. 59 Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes – Cooks Creek Cooks Creek Visit Cooks Creek Heritage Museum, situated in the oldest Galician settlement in Western Canada, includes a restored barn and blacksmith shop, pioneer homes, a candle house and chapel dedicated to early pioneers from Slavic Europe. Open for tours from May to August and in September by appointment. Admission charged. location: PR 212 and Sapton Rd. east of Birds Hill Provincial Park p: 204-444-4448 w: www.cchm.ca The Ukrainian Catholic Church of the Immaculate Conception (PHS) and the Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes, built by Father Philip Ruh O.M.I. and his parishioners features characteristic onion domes. Divine Liturgy every Sunday at 10:30 a.m. English sung. Group outdoor area and picnic tables. Group tours welcome. Admission charged. Three-day pilgrimage in mid-August. location: corner of PR 212 and Zora Rd. p: 204-444-2478 w: www.immaculate.ca East Braintree The Midwinter Heritage Site is a museum in a century-old one-room schoolhouse. Bus tours by reservation. Open June to August. location: just off Hwy. 1, 100 km east of Winnipeg or 12 km west of Falcon Lake p: 204-426-5510, 204-287-2316 w: www.rmofreynolds.com Gardenton Visit St. Michael's Ukrainian Orthodox Church (PHS), the first Ukrainian Orthodox church in Canada, consecrated in October 1889. Lithographed icons from St. Petersburg, Moscow and Kiev, Ukraine decorate the sanctuary. location: 5 km/3 mi west of Gardenton on PR 209 b The Ukrainian Museum and Village tells the story about the early Ukrainian settlements. See period clothing, small tools, a one-room school, and a thatched roof clay house of an early settler. Enjoy the picnic area and local church exhibits. Open May to September. Admission charged. p: 204-425-3072, 204-425-3501 Giroux Experience the magic of this museum of magic and illusion, built in honour of Gordon and Marilyn Hornan's late son who loved magic. In Philip's Magical Paradise, see the Sword Illusion donated by Dean Gunnarson and two coins from Doug Henning. One was used by Houdini.
