Formed in 2014, the new Chamber had its official kickoff in May, and it's already making strides as an advocate for local businesses. Chamber president Johnathan Fahr says the Chamber will act as a liaison between entrepreneurs and the municipality, something that was lacking in the past. "Our businesses have to be heard," he says. "It helps to have a Chamber of Commerce group for municipalities to talk to. All the members provide us with feedback and we can take that to council. We have a progressive council that wants to support and promote local businesses." Fahr, who is vice-president of operations at the Fahr Group, a land development and planning firm, says the local business community is small, and the Chamber wants to help it grow and prosper. "We provide network opportunities for our members and community leadership and auditing. We're working on better signage and promotion of the businesses within East St. Paul." Chamber vice-president Corey DesJarlais says the size and sprawl of the community has posed challenges, since there is no central "business hub" to promote. "The businesses are spread out throughout the community, and we have some home businesses, as well," DesJarlais says. "There has been a disconnect between the business community and the municipality and residents of East St. Paul. There's been a lack of communication."
