Volunteers who join the Steppin' Up with Confidence and Steppin' Out with Confidence Peer Leadership programs receive training that prepares them to encourage older adults to be physically and mentally active. Originally part of a falls prevention program for older adults, Steppin' Up and Steppin' Out are peer-led exercise and walking programs that eliminate or remove barriers to physical activity, including perceived safety, accessibility and cost. Participants enjoy a variety of experiences, including mall walking, neighbourhood walks, trail walking and Nordic Pole walking. For information on these and other volunteer opportunities, visit the ALCOA-MB website at www.alcoamb.org or call toll free 1-866-202-6663. E va Carpick and Doreen Madden play their cards right at the Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries 55 Plus Games. For the past 10 years or so the duo have competed in whist and cribbage, travelling with The Pas contingent to the Games in Morris, Neepawa, Gimli and several other host cities and towns. While they've each won their share of medals, they finally struck gold in whist for the first time in Beausejour last summer. "We were lucky last year; we had the cards," Madden says. At 75, she's "the kid" in the relationship with friend and neighbour Carpick, who marks her 84th birthday in April. The pair play cards at the Golden Agers club at the Kin Centre three times a week and head to the Royal Canadian Legion for games on Saturdays. But Madden says heading to the 55 Plus Games each summer in the Golden Agers club van is always worth the trip. "You see people that you've met before and we enjoy that part of it," Madden says. "I guess when we get older we treasure our friends more and when we don't see them every day it's nice to see them from time to time." Deal them in this June – they plan to defend their title in Brandon. Gold medalists Eva Carpick and Doreen Madden will be defending their whist title at the Games in Brandon. Volunteers are valuable players in the Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries 55 Plus Games.
