But the owner of Fenwick & Co. Interior Design says personal tastes and client wish-lists dictate design decisions in Winnipeg. While formal dining rooms are back in other large centres, casual dining spaces are still a staple on the local scene, where open-concept main floors with kitchen islands are the rule. And that's Ok. While we've embraced some of the hotter trends — sliding barn doors and weathered wood accent walls, for example — Fenwick says homeowners are having it their way. "You have to stand back and say, 'Am I just going to love it for today or am I going to love it five years from now, or 10 years from now?' Or are you going to change it by then — and does it matter?" she says. "If you absolutely love it, do it." Fenwick advises anyone who's planning to build a home to consult a designer at the out- set. Sometimes moving a wall or cabinetry a few inches can make all the difference in how you use a space. And people are giving more thought to small conveniences. "I had a client who had two cats, so we actually designed a space that was easy-maintenance and not sitting in the middle of the floor for the litter," she says.
