4 HOME + GARDEN SPRING 2017 R enovations are a family affair for HGTV stars Bryan and Sarah Baeumler. Designer Sarah joined master renovator Bryan (Disaster DIY, Leave it to Bryan) in 2009 on House of Bryan, in which they custom-built their own home. Now, they flip homes on Bryan Inc., and they'll share tips at the Winnipeg Home + Garden Show. But first, they took time out during a family vacation for a short Q&A: WHAT PROJECTS DO YOU HAVE ON THE GO RIGHT NOW? B: We just wrapped up Bryan Inc., Home to Win 2 and for me, another season of Leave it to Bryan. We are currently gearing up for season two of Bryan Inc., which we begin filming in April. WHAT CAN THE AUDIENCE EXPECT AT THE WINNIPEG HOME + GARDEN SHOW? WILL YOU BE FOCUSING ON SPECIFIC TOPICS? B: We will be discussing a variety of topics regarding home renovations. Spring is right around the corner so we will do our best to answer as many DIY questions as we can about making your home projects a success. S: Of course, we will also be dishing on what it is like to renovate with your spouse. If anyone has expertise in that area, it's us! WHAT TIPS DO YOU HAVE FOR HOMEOWNERS WHO WOULD LIKE TO RENOVATE THEIR HOME? B: Plan! Figure out a couple of projects you want to get done, and then start scheduling a timeline and narrowing down a budget. Try not to fit in too many projects given your resources and timing. S: Once you have those big questions answered, you can start to map out what you will be able to tackle on your own, and what jobs might require a professional. WHAT ARE SOME DIY PITFALLS? B: Biting off more than you can chew! Understand when a DIY project is too advanced and know when to call in some help. Attempting something on your own and not doing it correctly the first time can end up costing you more time and money in the long run. S: I agree with Bryan. Not doing your research is another big one. Whether that comes to considering a contractor you're hiring or selecting paint colours for the living room. Take the extra time and make sure you are 100 per cent certain. WHEN YOU'RE NOT BUSY WORKING ON YOUR TV SHOWS, HOW DO YOU LIKE TO SPEND YOUR FREE TIME? S: With the kids! We do our best to try and juggle work and play. Bryan always says "work hard, play hard," and I think we live by that motto as much as we can. Having a job you are passionate about is so important, but family comes first in our eyes.
