In 2007, the first celebration was an hour long concert held in a park outside APTN headquarters in downtown Winnipeg. Fast-forward to 2017, this upcoming edition the cities will be united, despite the distance, through two significant traditions. Each site will honour the creator and welcome the summer solstice by lighting and keeping a sacred fire. Following that, ADL invites everyone to join hands at noon - central time - for what will be the largest round dance in Canada in show of solidarity as a nation. So what can we expect in Winnipeg? From sunrise to sunset, the Forks will be transformed into a spectacular Community Celebration Village. Starting the day off with a Sunrise Ceremony and Sacred Fire at Oodena Circle. At 12:00 p.m., FREE family friendly activities will take over the grounds. Come try your hand at authentic soap stone making with Art City, or maybe you'd like to explore the Manitoba Museum tent for a hands on experience with artifacts from Turtle Island. And there is plenty for the kids like the APTN Kids Zone where they will have face painting, bouncy polar bear and games. Capture all the FUN and memories at the APTN photo booth, provided by SoulPix Photobooth, where you can get printouts of photos. No worries if you aren't the type to pack a lunch or other snacks to keep you going throughout the day. Locally- sourced food trucks and vendors with plenty of food will be there to nourish your tastes. You can also pop by the Winnipeg's Best Bannock Competition and taste some of the best the city has to offer and watch as they compete for number one. Yes – some of the best moveable cuisine and bannock makers in Winnipeg will be at the celebration. Aboriginal Day Live Pow Wow brought to you by APTN and the Manito Ahbee Festival is a unique opportunity to see the beauty of so many dancers in full regalia and hear the harmony of song and the beats of the drum. Grand Entry begins at 1:00 p.m. There will be over $6,500 in prizes. For all the details see aboriginaldaylive.com. In partnership with Sk8 Skates, the Skateboard Competition is a flurry of flips and tricks. Drop by to learn << CONTINUED FROM PREVIOUS INDUSTRY DRIVEN. STUDENT FOCUSED.
