Accredited F ounder Lucy Fouasse, a long-time counsellor and a member of the Canadian Professional Counselling Association, started the business in 2015, and she understands the healing power of animals all too well. Fol- lowing a head injury about four years ago, she had to learn to focus on her strengths rather than her limitations. She says miniature horses helped in her healing and she wanted to share their gifts with others. A mother of two, Fouasse and her human staff and volunteers work with two large horses, 12 miniature horses, a small donkey, pigs, a trio of rats, a tiny dog, two fainting goats and more, offering day camps, wellness days and school workshops. Each animal has a special talent: The fainting goats teach kids about anxiety and how to overcome it. Fleur teaches them how to be a leader, and the little rats teach kids not to judge a book by its cover. Through animal-assisted coun- selling, kids and teens develop social skills, confidence and coping skills such as emotional regulation. Earlier this year, Fouasse won first place in the Seasoned Entrepreneur category in the Community Futures 2016- 2017 Just Watch Me! video contest, receiving a $1,000 cash prize and access to professional marketing expertise to help grow her business. The annual contest recognizes entrepreneurial spirit and celebrates the success of rural entrepreneurs with disabilities or health concerns. Learn more about the contest and see the winning videos at www.justwatchme.ca. To learn more about Lil' Steps, pay a visit to www.lilstepswellnessfarm.net.
