BRING THE BIG VIEW
INDOORS
Full-size refrigerators without built-in ice and water dispensers
are becoming a rarity, and new models are available with
coffee brewers, too. Lately, multiple doors and drawers are
showing up, including low-height doors just for the kids, crisper
drawers that let you pull out the kale without opening the main
fridge compartment and meat-thawing drawers with separate
temperature controls.
See-through doors and touchscreen display windows are the
latest thing. And Thermador makes a line of "culinary preservation
columns" so designing homeowners can mix and
match tall freezers, fridges and wine columns that
can hold up to 99 bottles of wine in three different
temperature zones.
Stainless steel is the dominant finish, but at least
it's now available in black and matte grey. And
retro '50s-style fridges come in pretty much every
colour except harvest gold.
Retro ranges with self-cleaning ovens are another
hot item and here's a fun fact: While self-cleaning
ovens have been around since 1963, it is possible
to buy a stove that requires muscle power to clean.
For all the gourmet chefs out there, French-door
wall ovens and steam ovens are the latest must-
have, and induction cooktops are a welcome
convenience that let you boil water for your Kraft
Dinner in 90 seconds.
What will they think of next?
