Winter is
Coming
Chill out and have
more fun in the snow
BY JANINE LEGAL
For some Manitobans, the concept of winter fun isn't
always easy to grasp, so it's a good idea to start preparing
with some information gathering early on.
Y
ou'll find many fun-filled activities that can be enjoyed even on the
coldest winter days. From dog sledding, ice fishing and downhill
skiing to walks under the brilliant, sparkling winter skies, if you're
dressed for it, then all kinds of good times can be had.
Rather than hibernate, put on the fleece, the parka, the boots, and get out
there and build that snowman. You can warm up with hot chocolate and a
big fluffy blanket later.
Parkland Tourism executive director Kathy Swann encourages everyone
to make the most of our famously cold winters, and she points to several of
the countless winter activity options.
"It's never too cold to suit up and enjoy winter," Swann says.
"For a taste of winter fun in the Parkland region, come to the Swan Valley
for downhill skiing and several hundred kilometres of snowmobile trails,
visit the Asessippi Ski area for downhill and boarding as well as dog sledding
with Bluesky Expeditions from Churchill. Stop in Riding Mountain Na-
tional Park for outdoor skating and a luxurious spa treatment at the Elkhorn
Resort, or come experience some of the region's unsurpassed sport fishing at
an ice-fishing derby."
If you're eager to get on a snowmobile and explore one or more of the
groomed trails or take in an event, the Parkland is a popular sledding des-
tination. With more than 3,300 kilometres of developed trails that take in
breathtaking scenery, winter can be more memorable in the best of ways this
year. Snowmobile trail maps are available at service stations and hotels, and
online at snoman.mb.ca.
When you're looking for a variety of activities in one spot, start at Asessip-
pi Ski Area and Resort near Inglis. The resort offers 26 downhill runs, a tub-
ing park and all kinds of events throughout the season. During Christmas
break, it's open every day, and on New Year's Eve the Squirrel Chair — one
of three chair lifts — is open until midnight. The other two lifts are the Por-
cupine and Bear chairs. As well, they have the Ollie Express, which is a mov-
ing 'magic' carpet that services the Bunny Hill and Tubing Park. New Year's
celebrations are particularly special at Asessippi, as there are two fireworks
displays, children's activities, a supper special and a midnight torch run.
"Christmas and New Year's break is always a special time of year for us,"
says Hannah Holt, who handles marketing and events. "It's our busiest time
of the year and we have so many people on the hill having fun. We cater to
all ages, and have rentals for all ages and sizes."
You can make a return trip for an action-packed February long weekend,
which includes more fireworks, ski and snowboard competitions, and a two-
day Amazing Race.
Along with skiing, the resort offers snowshoeing on a beautiful snowshoe
trail along the Shell River, as well as snow biking.
"You get a lesson to start with to show newbies how to handle the bike and
ride it down the slopes. Then you're off! I've tried it and loved it," Holt says.
Throughout the holidays and on weekends, a mid-run cabin is open.
It's the perfect place to stop and have a quick drink or burger, Holt sug-
gests. There are fire pits going outside and the barbecue is always
warm and ready to keep visitors comfortable.
Private, beginner and group skiing and snowboarding lessons
are available, with nationally certified instructors. And if you're
planning a winter wedding, the resort has a number of venue
options, both indoor and outdoor.
Swann notes that there are many wildlife sites in the region,
and places known for their incredible beauty are popular des-
tinations year-round.
If birds are your thing, join Riding Mountain National Park
staff and local birders as they spend the day walking, skiing and
snowshoeing their way through the park, counting our winter
feathered friends during the annual Christmas Bird Count.
In early March, the park is the site of the Riding Mountain
Loppet, a cross-country ski race for a variety of ages and skill
levels, followed by a Family Fun Day.
See? There's really no reason to choose to stay cooped up this
winter, is there? ■
