"When you walk into the hall, (homeowners) really want you to
see it, especially with these open-concept (floor plans)," she
says. "You can get a wallcovering that can tie two completely
different colour tones together, the same way that fabric does.
"It might be in the middle of two rooms, but
it's going to be a focal point, or it's a wall in the
bedroom. Bathrooms are another area that people
want to dress up because it's not a big area."
Pick a pattern: Old-fashioned florals have
made way for larger patterns, with some
repeating every 24 or 30 inches.
"The patterns have changed, thank goodness,"

thought if I never saw another flower again it
would be too soon."
Popular choices include damask and those
with sparkle or texture. Winnipeggers tend to
favour monochromatic looks, and the younger
generation leans toward big patterns and bold colours.
Murals are a fad that hasn't faded, and some people do a
series of panels, alternating paint with a panel of wallcovering.
"There's so much to choose from, but it's so personal,"
Kuchciak says.
