Some people follow fashion; others blaze their own trail. Signature Homes has positioned itself firmly in the latter camp, with a distinct vision for modern affordable housing. Adventurous style and practical sensibility are a winning combination for the company, which springs a few new surprises during the Parade of Homes. Founded in Winnipeg in 1969, Signature Homes was acquired by third-generation Brandon-based family business J&G Group in January 2015. Committed to maintaining the company's long tradition of quality workmanship and attention to detail, general manager Gerry Mawhinney and his team also brought a feisty new energy to the business. Their Signature style is on display at four show homes, at 24 Landover Drive and 205 Willow Creek Road in Bridgwater Trails, 44 Bow Water Drive in Bonavista and 44 Eaglewood Drive in Prairie Pointe. Each home is unique in its own way. The visitable bungalow on Willow Creek Road brings back some classic design elements with a contemporary twist. Along with striking wainscotting throughout the main living space, it has a bright, galley-style kitchen just off the dining and bar area, with large windows, multiple lighting fixtures and speakers connected to the house's sound system, so cooks can get into their own groove. "You're tucked away, which is nice. All your cooking and all your mess isn't in the living room like with an open concept," Mawhinney says. The bi-level show home on Eaglewood Drive also offers a welcome note of seclusion, with a sunken foyer to keep footwear neatly out of sight. Above the foyer, bench seating at one end of the kitchen is another unique feature, and even the bathrooms have distinctive touches, such as mosaic tile flooring and bold blue wall tile. The Bonavista show home's attractions start with curb appeal. A rustic stone exterior finish that looks like barn board is contrasted with a modern roof line. Inside, the house earns its model name, The Luxe, with wood-grain flooring, a fireplace entertainment wall and high-end finishes. Over on Landover Drive, Signature Homes' first side-by- side project boasts luxurious features, as well, including a walkout basement and a main-floor deck overlooking a man-made lake, luxury vinyl plank flooring and electric fireplace entertainment centre. "It's an all-inclusive project, so your extra pot lights, your upgraded cabinetry, your upgraded flooring, all those types of things are all included," Mawhinney says. "You still have your choice of selections, but we've done a play on a house with all the amenities as a standard. "IT'S GOT ALL THE AMENITIES OF A CUSTOM- BUILT HOME AND IT'S STILL 1,500 SQUARE FEET, SO YOU GET A GREAT LIVING SPACE AND A NICE DECK THAT LOOKS OVER THE LAKE AND AT A REALLY AFFORDABLE PRICE."
