A JOKE that the quickest way to
a divorce was for a couple to hang
wallpaper together.
Things have changed since those
days — in so many ways.
First of all, it's now more commonly
referred to as wallcovering, not
wallpaper, says Karen Kuchciak, who
knows the ups and downs of the
product she's sold at Western Paint
and Wallcovering for more than 40
years.
Over the decades she's witnessed
new developments in everything from
pricing to application methods to
pattern options. If you're considering
wallcovering to spruce up your home,
keep these points in mind.
Consider costs: It's a bit quirky, but
while wallcovering is typically priced
as a single roll, it's sold in a double
roll, which covers a space about five
feet wide and eight or nine feet high.
Kuchciak says prices have climbed
to a starting point of about $50 for
a single roll. The price is one reason
homeowners often hire a professional
installer, especially if the wallcovering
is going in a bathroom where a lot of
cuts are needed.
Focus on focal points: The cost
of wallcovering has also influenced
a trend toward covering a small area
such as a foyer or a single feature wall
instead of an entire room.
"You do your fun entranceway, your
one wall in the master bedroom.
Maybe you make a headboard out of
it and put a really nice frame around
it," Kuchciak says.
The point is to make an impact,
treating the wallcovering as almost a
piece of art.
