Turland says there is no specific demo- graphic for their clients, who come from all ages and backgrounds. “Tile is an upgraded floor finish. Most people who have that in their budget will also have a budget for heated floors. New custom houses will use this a lot, as well as high-end renovators.” Consumers meet with the builder or reno- vator, who will explain the process. Costs dis- cussed will include materials and the fee to bring in an electrician. “Once the client picks their tile finishes, we will have everything on file. When the work starts, we need to know where the thermostat placement will be before laying any of the wire,” Turland says, noting that every separate area of the home with in-floor heating requires its own thermostat. Turland strongly advises that clients do their due diligence and hire only qualified profes- sional electricians to do the work. “At The Floor Show, we have procedures in place to protect. We test every wire as it’s what Schluter requires. We also take all the necessary pictures in the event we need to recall the wire layout. Very rarely do we encounter complaints when the protective steps are taken.” For Dan Schille, vice-president of The Floor Show, investing in in-floor heating means mak- ing a long-lasting contribution to your home. “It doesn’t have any burnout issues, as long as it’s installed properly,” says Schille, who has 30 years of experience in flooring. A Schluter Systems standard warranty is 15 years, but — with Turland in agreement — Schille affirms that in-floor heating should last the life of the flooring.
Radiant floor heating uses a lower temperature than traditional heating methods, which can fur- ther reduce energy consumption. “A lot of our clients will tell us how spoiled they feel with in-floor heating,” Turland says, adding that there’s no chance he would install tile in his own home without heat in any future renovations. “Schluter Systems have come a long way to simplify laying the heating cable for floor- ing contractors. They’ve really streamlined the installation process. Over a decade ago, it was a lot harder to install heating cable as it was up to the installer to complete the circuit by returning the cable back to the starting point. They’ve made it made easier by eliminating this step and adding a membrane to which the cable can safely lock into.” Long-time heated-floor users say there are many additional benefits for the whole fam- ily, including the four-legged members. Cats in particular are known to gravitate to warm surfaces. Once installed, in-floor heating is mainte- nance-free, and most people leave it on 12 months a year.
