“Obviously, there’s the convenience of never having to go up on a ladder,” Banks says. “But there’s also that safety concern, too. There’s no risk of injury trying to put up lights every year with permanent lighting. My neighbour used to put up lights all the time, and one time he actually fell off a ladder and broke his arm. The next year he purchased Trimlight and he’s never looked back.” Banks says there are a couple reasons why new homebuyers should consider installing per- manent outdoor lighting during construction of their dwelling. Any wiring the system may require can be more easily hidden during construction for a much cleaner look from the ground. As well, the cost of lighting can be rolled into their mortgage rather than having to pay for it upfront. “It’s not a major cost, but it’s still significant whereas if it’s tied to the cost of building, it’s a frac- tion of that price,” he adds. While the cost of lighting a home’s exterior can vary depending on the size and shape of the house, the current industry average is typically between $22 and $25 a linear foot.
