"The great thing is that it's all right there in one facility," says Magnif- ico, adding that there will be more than 185 exhibitor booths and over 30 Day in the Life speaker sessions. "It gives students the ability to do some real powerful searching." To make their employment search easier, symposium organizers have re-jigged the symposium floor layout to make it that much more user-friendly. "The job board — which will have at least 150 part-time jobs posted on it — will be closer to the inter- view and resumé design sec- tions. Students can locate a job, and then simply walk over and sit down and chat with a prospective employer." At the same time, areas like the University of Manitoba Corridor — where current students from a wide range of faculties will be available to talk with high-schoolers – will provide valuable feedback on an area they might have interest in. "It will give students a direct, hands-on feel," he notes. "For ex- ample, students interested in being a doctor can talk to pre-med stu- dents. That in-person conversation will give them a deeper sense of af- firmation or validation of what that field is about." Meanwhile, there will also be lots of hands-on activities designed to pique the interest of attendees. "There will be lots of things to ex- perience and try. The idea behind that is to allow students to test their mettle a bit so they can see what might — or might not — ap- peal to them." Finally, there are the Day in the Life speaker sessions, adds Magnifico. "There will be over 30 speakers that will conduct TED Talks-type sessions. Speakers will include chefs, physiotherapists, account- ants, architects, physician assist- ants, air traffic controllers, artist- designers and more." And while the symposium's size and scope can be overwhelming, Magnifico encourages students to take advantage of the opportunity of having so many great career- oriented resources right at their fingertips. "Students need to step outside their comfort zone. If you find something that interests you, talk to someone. You never know what someone or something is about without taking the time to ask questions." In turn, those questions could well lead to a career that's incredibly fulfilling. "That's what the Rotary Career Symposium is all about — help- ing students find the right fit, or at least get them on the right path," he says. "If you come prepared to explore and engage, good things will happen."
