Close enough to have an easy commute to Winnipeg, they also enjoy the benefits of living in a smaller centre. The new Selkirk Biz logo sums it up with the tagline It's All Right Here. "Our location is very strategic," says Sheri Skalesky, executive director of Selkirk Biz, formerly the Selkirk and District Chamber of Commerce. "We have such a great quality of life here, and we don't have the traffic issues that people have in Winnipeg. All of our needs and most of our wants are satisfied here." There's more satisfaction in Selkirk's future. A new hotel and a hospital with an MRI unit are expected to open over the next few years, and a new library will open by the end of 2013. "We have all these new exciting projects happening. Selkirk is on the verge of something very, very big," Skalesky says. "The hospital is going to attract new doctors to the community. It's only a matter of time." Selkirk Mayor Larry Johannson says the city hasn't seen a boom like this since the 1970s. "We have affordable housing and luxury homes, apartment blocks and seniors' housing going up. Everywhere you look there's construction and projects on the go."
