EASTERN When it started operating in 1941, it had 95 members and assets on deposit of less than $1,000. Today it has more than 80,000 members, with assets on deposit of more than $3.4 billion. SCU's commitment to Steinbach is reflected in its choice of sites for its new home base. Another location might have been more convenient, but having a Main Street location is in the city's best interest. "We own almost five acres of land on Highway 12, just south of Canadian Tire, which would have been an ideal site," Falk says. "But we felt strongly that we should stay downtown if a suitable site could be found." Steinbach Chamber of Commerce executive director Linda Peters says SCU's central location is important to the business community. The chamber polled its membership last spring and the message that came back was loud and clear — a major SCU presence is a must to ensure the future vitality of downtown Steinbach. "We definitely felt that staying downtown was better than moving out on Highway 12," Peters says, adding the highway location doesn't face the same challenges. "We think that area will thrive and grow regardless of where the SCU headquarters is located." www.scu.mb.ca Steinbach Credit Union president Ted Falk (above).
