BUILDING THE WORKFORCE

BUILDING THE WORKFORCE: Technology, talent and the future of jobs in Manitoba’s north BY TODD LEWYS

I magine having the drive to build a better life for yourself but being held back by limited access to education, technology and transpor- tation because of where you live. For many students in remote communi- ties throughout Manitoba’s north, that scenario is their reality. Compared with their peers in southern parts of the province, students in remote communities often face barriers such as reliable internet service, limited access to computers and transportation challenges — obstacles that can affect high school

completion and access to post-secondary education. It’s a gap that has existed for decades, but efforts are underway to address it. “We’re transforming education by start- ing younger with students and adapting classic systems to fit modern career paths,” says Tara Munro, associate vice- president of transformation for University College of the North (UCN), acknowledg- ing the need to address the long-term effect of residential schools, assimilation and systemic underfunding.
