In May 2012 The Economic Dependency Trap: Breaking Free to Self-Reliance was an- nounced as the winner of the 2012 Gold Medal in the Self-Help Category in the prestigious 16th annual Ippy Awards. The 2012 Indepen- dent Publisher Book awards are billed as the world's largest international and regional book awards competition. The author picked up his gold medal in the New York, NY., June 4, 2012 – Aboriginal author Cal- vin Helin has won a fourth ma- jor American recognition for his influential book The Economic Dependency Trap: Breaking Free to Self-Reliance. The book was voted a Finalist in the COVR Visionary Awards, Gen- eral Interest / How-To category. The winners and runners up will be announced at the IN- ATS (International New Age Trade Show) Ban- quet at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 23, 2012 at the Denver Merchandise Mart in Denver, Colorado. This follows the recent recognition as a Finalist for the Next Generation Indie Book Awards. The Indie awards are open to authors and publishers worldwide and are the largest not-for-profit awards program for independent ceremony held in New York City with the atten- dance and support of his older brother Patrick Helin and good friend Darrell Beaulieu, whose story about the value of education as a young boy is featured in the book. Darrell travelled the great distance from Yellowknife, Northwest Territories to attend the event, and Patrick trav- elled from Prince Rupert in the northern coast of British Columbia. The IPPY Awards are highly regarded and are issued based on the decision of a panel of publishing experts. Leading U.S. editor El- len Kleiner of Blessingway Authors' Services notes that being a gold medalist "is awesome considering the enormous number of submis- sions in this category. It's oceanic, and a real distinction to have made it to the top." These awards also follow closely on the heels of recognition in the 2011 USA "Best Books Awards where The Economic Depen- dency Trap was recognized as a Finalist in the highly competitive "Self-Help: General" cat- egory. The 2011 8th annual USA "Best Books" awards honour outstanding mainstream and independent books. Responding to news of Helin's Gold Medal win and other recognitions, Canada's most distinguished journalist and writer Peter C. Newman commented, "I predicted that Helin would become a major 21st century voice of universal reason – and now he has." Mr. Helin is set to release his new book The Empowerment Mindset: Success through Self-Knowledge and the release date will be announced at the BookExpo of America, North America's largest annual book fair, in New York this week. His first book Dances with Dependency: Out of Poverty through Self- Reliance is now a seven-times bestseller and well on its way to becoming one of the most influential books on indigenous issues ever written.
