Norway House has a rich his- tory. As the hub of northern Man- itoba and situated on the north basin of Lake Winnipeg, Norway House played a fundamental role in establishing the economic foundation of Manitoba and Can- ada during the fur trade era. Norway House first emerged as a significant post in 1821, when the Hudson's Bay Company and the Northwest Company merged and received its name when the Hudson's Bay Company estab- lished a post near the outlet of Lake Winnipeg in 1814 and re- cruited Norwegian labourers to build it. The new post was named after the Norwegian labourers (Norway House) in recognition of their exceptional building skills. After 1822, Norway House became a sub-depot for the col- lection of inland furs which were transported by canoe through Lake Winnipeg, mainly to York Factory. As the fur trade grew and expanded through North America, canoes became an ab- solute necessity for transporting cargo (furs and goods) and had the capacity to carry a crew of up to 12 people and cargo weighing approximately 2400 kilograms. Eventually, the demand of the fur trade became so great that the use of canoes was phased out and replaced with the York Boat. York Boats were first built in Albany Fort in the 1740s from spruce logs, and were based on an old Orkany design which was derived from Viking long-ships. The name York boat was derived from York Factory as the com- mon destination of transported goods and furs during the fur trade era. York boats were built to trans- port a greater amount of freight and could withstand the rigid wa- ters (especially when en route to England) and were propelled by six to eight oarsmen who worked twenty-foot oars, as well as a steersman. Today, the Archway Ware- house, the jail and the ruins of the powder magazine along with our Annual Treaty and York Boat Days festival, continue to be re- minders of Norway House's sig- nificance and role in the fur trade, and in the development of Cana- da's economy. A major highlight of our cel- ebration is the world champion York boat races in memory of Henry and Mary Ann Mumi- nawatum along with the Gospel Jamboree (July 27th-29th), Eyaa-Keen Healing Centre Inc.
