Interest, texture, pattern, colour. These are words you’ll hear again and again when designing anything, but they might not be top of mind when you think of walls.
E nter the resurgence of wallpaper. Not your grandmother’s florals, psyche- delic velvet or ’90s pastels; today’s wallpaper options offer something for every taste, are easier than ever to apply (and remove) and can be used in more ways than you might think. Styles in home decor and trends, as well as in fashion, are extremely cyclical, says Jade Shynkaruk, lead designer at TENTEN Kitchens. She points to the return of Art Deco touches that are currently experiencing a resurgence almost exactly a century after their original rise. The demand for minimalist and Scandinavian- inspired design, Tuscan Revival and Modern Farmhouse have equally experienced a rise and subsequently fallen out of fashion. This does not mean that you should avoid committing to a design vision. Instead, look fur- ther into the past for a previously trendy style that is now on the upswing — or, better yet, artfully combine design styles for a space that feels less style-specific. Over the past several years, Shynkaruk has seen a renaissance in wallpaper use. “During the pandemic, and with people being at home more, everyone started wanting to make their spaces feel more cozy, more lived in, more personalized,” she explains. “I found that tilt towards more traditional design, a resurgence of that esthetic started up ticking in the early 2020s and, now, into 2026 it has fully taken hold.”

The main advantage of wallpaper is pattern: bold and interesting, with a mix of colours you can’t really get with other wall techniques.
Wallpaper today can be whatever you want it to be, with Shynkaruk describing current offerings as “choose your own adventure.” It can be subtle and muted, adding light touches of texture or depth, or bright and busy, like a room full of your favourite motifs (jungle cats, classic cars, exotic flora, cartoon characters … we could go on). The main advantage of wallpaper is pattern: bold and interesting, with a mix of colours you can’t really get with other wall techniques. Shynkaruk loves to mix different wall methods — such as wall mouldings, plaster effect and paint — throughout a home, and she sees wall- paper as another tool in the box of available wall decoration techniques. “It’s popular because people do truly love it, and it is so worth it. There are so many beautiful wallpapers that add depth and dimension and opulence to the space but that are a lot more subtle,” she says.

investment, peel-and-stick options make it an accessible DIY endeavour, and properly prep- ping the walls and following the instructions will improve removability. Shynkaruk recom- mends having your wallpaper professionally installed if your budget allows since it will pay off in the quality of the finished results and your ultimate satisfaction with it. If you are considering adding a wallpaper design to your home, Shynkaruk says to take the plunge and do a whole room rather than a feature wall, which has fallen out of fashion. It will feel much more cohesive, higher-end and more intentionally designed, she says. At the same time, she acknowledges that papering a whole room can be costly and explains that there are other affordable options. “It’s more affordable to do those details that are more self-contained, like the back of a glass door cabinet, the inside of a closet or wardrobe, or lining the drawers of your favourite dresser or storage cabinet,” she suggests. “If people are interested in doing applied wall mouldings rather than wallpapering the entire room, you

It’s such a wonderful tool for expressing your style. I like to tell people that if you’re a little bit scared of wall- paper, I would always recommend it because I’ve never regretted it,” she says. “I have installed wallpaper in my own house and for many clients, and I find that people really love design and decor that feels personal to them. It actually ends up having more lon- gevity, and they get bored of it less quickly than more generic design.” Wallpaper installation is also easier than it used to be. While good-quality wallpaper is an

could just do wallpaper sections inside those panel sections. Conversely, an even more afford- able option is to buy large frames and put wall- paper in the frames and hang those as art.” If you’re not ready to commit to a full room of wallpaper, one option is to start with a smaller space — a bathroom or powder room, closet or office. Another unique option is to wallpaper the ceiling, an under-appreciated and under-utilized fifth wall in a space, according to Shynkaruk. Before undertaking any design project, she recommends starting with an overall vision. For new builds, consider the materials to be used in each room, millwork plans and sightlines. For existing homes, she suggests harmonizing your design plans with the space’s feel and purpose. While interior design trends come and go, Shynkaruk says it’s more important to focus on what fits the design esthetic you’re trying to achieve or what complements and enhances your own home.

BRINGING TOGETHER WOMEN IN RESIDENTIAL CONSTRUCTION

T he Women in Residential Construction in residential construction throughout the prov- ince, promoting collaboration and initiatives that strengthen women’s success across the industry. The MHBA held its first WIRCC official meeting in the spring of 2026, says WIRCC chair Tanya Maric, which had an overwhelmingly positive reception. “There are a number of women in residential construction, so this was a great opportunity to officially make something just for us,” she says. “We had about 60 women at our first event. I spoke with everyone that was there, and the most common feedback was that they were so glad we’re doing this and we have an opportunity to meet other women within our industry. There was definitely a lot of excitement.” Council (WIRCC) champions the advance- ment, support and representation of women A council for women in construction has been a topic of conversation for some time, Maric says, with the Canadian Home Builders’ Association forming its first council for women in residential construction last year. With more women joining the ranks in residential construction, the Manitoba Home Builders’ Association (MHBA) has created a new council to ensure women have representation in the industry.

— and then still have these great careers and full-time jobs. So it’s an opportunity for us to be able to learn from each other, to connect.” The next step will be focusing on learn- ing opportunities, specifically driven toward women, from motivational speaking to ses- sions focusing on career growth. “There’s always an educational compo- nent to the MHBA’s Housing Forum that is put on in November,” Maric says. “We’re looking at having some educational sessions that are directly geared towards women — as well as for men who have a lot of women that work with them so they can make sure they’re doing the right things in terms of retention and keep- ing women in the industry.” Recruiting and retention have also been topics coming up more and more frequently, she adds. “Trade shortage in general is an area that I would say all sectors are trying to focus on. There’s a lot of aging out at this point. So whether it be male or female, recruitment is definitely a topic across construction, across the board,” she says. “But there’s some great opportunities for women in all areas of construction. There’s really a focus on getting more women into these fields.” The MHBA has been around a long time, Maric says, adding it’s great to see the “old boys club” mentality shift away. “I’m a second-generation business owner. My father was part of that initial MHBA genera- tion, so it’s great to be able to see women taking charge and creating their own pathway. I really hope that the WIRCC can help them do that, to take charge and ownership of their careers,” she says. “We definitely have a lot to offer.” With the support of the MHBA, Maric says she’s excited to see what the WIRCC can do in the province. “I love being part of the MHBA. Our asso- ciation is so important. With a number of existing councils pop- ping up at various locals across Canada, this gives councils a chance to learn from each other and put together a strategy. “It’s really been a great opportunity to help all these existing committees and councils across Canada connect and learn from each other, exchange information — and then, from a national perspective, create a path forward for the Women in Residential Construction portion to grow,” Maric says. “We were able to take that information, such as some of the events they were doing and best practices, and use that to start our own local association.” One of the top priorities of the WIRCC right now is getting the word out about the council and the networking opportunities it aims to create for women in the industry. “There has been a steady growth of women in residential construction specifically, so it’s important to have that opportunity to meet with like-minded individuals in our field,” Maric says. “A lot of us have similar struggles, like bal- ancing our kids and taking care of a home — all those things that are still very traditional in the sense that women tend to take the lead on

Home theatres don’t look the way they used to. Gone are the days of bulky entertainment units and tangled cords, replaced by hidden speakers and immersive surround sound that blend seamlessly into any space.
“ F rom what we’ve seen working in the Winnipeg new-home construction market, the traditional dedicated home theatre room has become less common than it was years ago,” says Laurence Rosenberg, presi- dent of The Accurate Technology Group (ATG). “For the majority of homeowners, however, home theatre technology hasn’t disappeared — it has simply become integrated into the main living areas of the home. Great rooms, family rooms and living rooms are now often designed

So the pre-wire stage of a home for technology is fundamental. As long as you’ve had the fore- thought to pre-wire and set the home up for the future, you may add things to the home as you are financially free to do so,” he says. “So pre-wiring for more speakers through- out the house, pre-wiring for an automation system, pre-wiring for that theatre or that media room — it’s worth putting more forethought into what you’re going to do right now when you’re building that home. Don’t think about just what you’re going to put today. Try to think of down the road.” For people who want to upgrade their media in an existing space, Woycenko suggests start- ing with the budget and working from there. “You’re going to want to look at the room and decide how you want to lay it out so that it sounds the best within that environment,” he says. As for visuals in media rooms, Woycenko says most people are leaning toward televisions in the 65-inch to 83-inch range. However, a growing trend in higher-end home theatre rooms has been micro LED video walls, which are made up of micro LED video panels that fit together to create a video wall cus- tomized to the exact size you need. Depending on the space, Woycenko has started to see these being installed in media rooms as well.

This way, homeowners can have a great entertainment experience without the room looking like a traditional theatre. “Esthetic is very important within the home — everyone is looking for a cleaner look,” says Marvin Woycenko, an associate with ATG. “They want the technology, but they just don’t want it right in plain view. We’re seeing the integration of media, technology and sound really wrap around the look and feel of the home.” This is equally important — or maybe even more important — to the homeowners who are still building dedicated theatre rooms, Woycenko adds. “The homeowners who are still building dedicated theatres tend to be investing in much more elaborate higher-performance spaces, with better acoustics, larger screens and more sophisticated audio systems,” Rosenberg says. Coupled with economic factors in the Canadian landscape, Woycenko adds that he only sees the trend of home technology increas- ing, not decreasing. “I think the cost of travel for the average person now is becoming very expensive. It’s also more expensive to go out regularly. Post- COVID, I think we live in a very, very different world,” he says. “I think people are going to spend more time at home and are going to invest in their home because they’re staying home more. They want the conveniences and the comforts of having something a little nicer in the home.”

About 20 years ago, Adamo Rondinella had a dream — he wanted to build homes. “I was in mechanical engineering at Red River College and had always been interested in construction,” says the owner and president of ADR Properties. “So I just decided to jump into it. I started on my own, building one to two homes a year.” T he formative years of the company saw it build its homes in the city’s northern quad- rant and the Interlake. Today, the well-respected company — which homebuilding prowess to an altogether different area of the province. It’s an exciting time, Rondinella says.
“Of course, we really want to show what we’re capable of, but it’s something that we consciously temper,” he says. “In the past, we did some fancy show homes. Now, we do more restrained homes to show what we can do yet present it in a way that’s realistic and affordable.”
